Design Your Own Sweatshirt – Make Your Own Hoodie

For many of us the #1 hurdle is creating or finding graphic images, clip art, or illustrations to represent our design ideas. This is especially true when we have a special topic or theme we want to print on a sweatshirt, a hooded sweatshirt or a t-shirt. In your quest to locate an image be sure that you have permission to use it in the way you intend. There are a number of royalty free images available online and off that can fulfill your end the hunt.

Image Resources to Make Your Own Sweatshirt

Here are two of the best clip art sources I have found, I use them regularly:

1. Graphics Factory, for online downloadable clip art. I have found this online clip art resource to be exceptionally convenient. They offer, unlimited downloads – download as many as you want any time. They have huge and growing diversified collection of images (over 1 million), photos, illustrations, cartoons, backgrounds, animations, fonts and much more. This is often my first choice.
2. Art Explosion, for your computer at home or office. I use Nova Art Explosion 800,000. My family has tried a number of differt brands, I think this is the best. It came with a redeemable voucher for their fantastic printed paper catalog and a searchable catalog to find and browse images in my computer. It also came with graphic design software and several other very helpful graphics applications. It has just about everything you need to make your own sweatshirt, and shirts for family and friends too.

You can use any of these clip art images just as they are; but make sure you save the file as a JPG or PNG. Or take your design further, change or customize image colors, size, shape, and/or combine images, You can even use images for parts to make your own totally unique design. I do that frequently.

I want to make your own sweatshirt but where and how do I start? This is an age old question that even seasoned professional designers and artists continue to face. Many people use photos of people, pets and things; they print quite well on apparel. Things, themes, and topics that I am passionate about often trigger my creativity. It gets easier the more you do it. There really is no right or wrong when it comes to art and design. It’s about expressing yourself, your idea, your imagination. What matters most is that it expresses and makes a statement about whatever it is you have in mind.

You can print text, photos, images, clip art, and all types of graphics on a t-shirt, sweatshirt, and hooded sweatshirt. You can print words; you can print images, and combinations of the two. Most online apparel printing services, also known as “print on demand”, enable you to print on multiple locations; front, back, and pocket are most common. You can make fine adjustments to the positions and size of what you print in each location. You can even print different designs in each location if you want.

Some online apparel printing services do not print on the back side of “dark apparel”. Make Your Own Shirt will print on the back of dark sweatshirt shirts and other apparel. They offer excellent quality printing and quality apparel. I think they have the best designer system interface. It is easy to use with plenty of styling options, instructions are available, and has a fantastic collection of apparel choices for men, women, kids and baby. You can also access image size recommendations to make your own sweatshirt.

Designing your own sweatshirt with a word, phrase, saying or slogan is fairly easy. A variety of fonts and text style options are built into most online make your own sweatshirt shirt tools. You can easily put your favorite slogan or words saying on a sweatshirt. It’s a bit more complicated if you want your words to have special formatting, scaling, textures, or color transitions. The way you accomplish that is to create your own sweatshirt design on your computer. Be sure that when you make a graphic design it is “high” resolution and sufienctly large to fit the area of the item you want to print. Your image should be a minimum of 150ppi. I usuasaly make my image designs 300ppi and scale them to fit the item(s) I plan to print. Save your final image as a jpg or png file. Once you have your image saved you can upload it into the online shirt designer.

Make Your Own Sweatshirt Image File Types

Almost all online designer systems accept JPG and PNG files. PNG is best when you make your own sweatshirt because it not only maintains the highest quality with millions of colors but your file can also be saved with a transparent background. I save all my final images as “png” files. This is especially important for dark sweatshirt shirts as you often don’t want a background color to print. White backgrounds will print-out white if you are printing on dark colored apparel because of today’s new printing technology. Printers used for dark apparel can actually print “white”, but white backgrounds don’t print on light colored apparel because when they are set to light apparel mode the printer treats white as transparent.
